Team Teddy

This Five for Friday is all about bringing awareness to the adorable Teddy Fish and Menkes Syndrome.   There is a movement of supporters, bloggers, celebrities and athletes who are making  Team Teddy signs and posting them on social media. If you would like to read more about Teddy’s story please check out his CaringBridge page. I would like to do this Five for Friday on five staggering facts about Menkes Syndrome.

I am super excited to be participating in another link up hosted by: The Good LifeA. Liz AdventuresCarolina Charm, & Hello! Happiness.

1

Menkes is a rare genetic disease that is commonly overlooked by the medical community because the signs and symptoms at birth and in early infancy are subtle and often confused with other diseases. Early treatment of symptoms is crucial for these children to maintain a sense of normalcy during their infancy and early childhood.

2

Menkes syndrome is caused by a defect in the ATP7A gene and that makes it hard for the body to distribute copper in food from the intestines into the bloodstream for use in other areas. As a result, the brain and other parts of the body do not get enough copper.

3

Symptoms of Menkes can include, but are not limited to:

  • sparse, kinky hair
  • poor weight gain
  • sagging facial features
  • poor muscle tone
  • seizures

4

The incidence of Menkes syndrome  is estimated to be 1 in 100,000 newborns. Children with Menkes syndrome typically begin to develop symptoms during infancy and often do not live past age three.

5

As of today, there is still no cure. Awareness is the first step.
