I really need to start planning Elin’s second birthday! I just am not sure on what theme to go with. Once I have that all picked out, it will be so fun to start planning and thinking of all the little touches. How can she be almost 2???

Rosemary Beach Florida 2013

I am excited to begin planning our summer vacation. Elin had a blast last year and I am excited to see her enjoy it even more this year. I am hoping to find availability at the wonderful house we rented last year. It was just perfect.

I recently found out that a poster I worked on with my mentor got accepted to the Pediatric Academic Society in Vancouver, Canada this year! I have not decided if I am going to go. I went last year to the conference when it was in Washington, DC and it was a blast, however the conference is very close to Elin’s birthday and that is a hectic time to travel. I’ve never been to Canada or the West Coast so that would be exciting. I’m so proud to work with such a talented group of physicians.

I have officially been blogging for 1 month! The whole point of this blog is to document Elin’s daily life and to use this as a tool to encourage me to take more pictures. So far I think I am accomplishing that. I’m already meeting some amazing new friends and  I am excited to enjoy more of this new experience. Thank you to everyone reading and stopping by. To commemorate the one month I am posting one of Elin’s one month photos.

Elin at the Window

www.simplejoysblog.com

www.simplejoysblog.com

Elin loves playing in the sun room and she especially loves looking out the big picture window. As soon as she could pull herself to a stand, she was standing on her tiptoes and gazing out the window. She is always talking and pointing at the birds in the trees out the window and she also likes to look out at the golfers on the course behind our house.

www.simplejoysblog.com

Everyday after work, I pick her up from my mom’s house and when we get home, the first thing we do is let the dogs out of their crate and take them outside. In the warmer weather, Elin loves to come outside with me, but during the winter months she has to stay inside and she stands at the back window the whole time. She smiles and waves and most recently, she stands there and blows kisses the whole time I am outside. I think it’s the sweetest thing and I don’t want to forget the memory of her standing there. She is always so happy and all smiles the whole time. I can hear her in the there chanting “hi, hi, hi” over and over.

www.simplejoysblog.com

Not only do I love the fact that I know where she is and she not getting into mischief, but I think it’s just so very sweet. Pretty soon it will be warm enough for her to come out with me and she will just love that.

www.simplejoysblog.com

It may just be a little moment of our day, but it’s something that brings a smile to my face every time. I know that someday probably all too soon she will no longer find it exciting to watch me take the dogs out and I won’t see her cheerful face in the window.

21 Month Update

DSCN5492_text

The Stats:
Weight: 26 lbs
Height: 33 inches
Clothes: 18-24 months mostly.  She still has some things that are 12-18. However, I am trying to buy 2T for summer.
Diapers: Size 4
Shoes: 5.5-6
Teeth: 18

Elin’s language skills have exploded this month. She repeats everything we saw. She even says 3 word sentences. Her favorite words are naming farm animals and their sounds, shapes, and parts of the face. The words she says most often are: “hiiiiiiii” (high pitched and she draws out the i), “bye-bye”, “ok”, “yay”, “duck”, “horsey”, “cow”, “hair”, “eyes”, “circle”, “star”, “ted-ted” (for her teddy grahams), “fish”, “fluffer” (for butterfly), “flower”, and “thank you”. There are many, many more but those are he ones she says ALL THE TIME! She did say her name once to me right after I said her name.

IMG_2405

She loves watching Micky Mouse Clubhouse and dancing to the hot dog dance. That is by far her favorite part. She loves baby Einstein and Brainy Baby on the iPad. She likes to count along with the show. She can say most of the numbers, but one, two, and eight seem to be her favorites.

IMG_2077

She still adores playing with books, puzzles, and little stuffed animals. She still loves playing in her tent and with her piano as well. She is really starting to enjoy sitting at her little table and chairs for coloring and playing with her tea set.

DSCN6057_text2

She sings along to the ABC song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star when I sing them. She also loves songs from Gymboree class and the Itsy Bitsy spider from her story time group at the library.

Favorite foods: strawberries, string cheese, mac and cheese, grilled chicken, Teddy Grams, green beans, Goldfish crackers, Cheerios, applesauce pouches, and Gerber Grabbers. She only drinks water and milk, and out of the blue she has been want to drink  from plastic straw cups. I think she sees me drinking out of those kinds of cups a lot and that has piqued her interest. However, she isn’t picky if she is thirsty and she will drink it in whatever cup you give her.

IMG_1927

Elin has been enjoying dancing around the house, spinning, blowing kisses, waving bye-bye, and petting the dogs. She is more or less always in a pretty good mood and loves applause and cheering. She is longing to get outside more. She loves standing in the sun room and looking outside at the birds and trees. She is anxiously awaiting spring and warmer temps.

She does not enjoy the word no; however, she is rather good about listening and quitting doing whatever action she is told to stop.

Max is 5 on Friday!

-0071

1

Today is a very special day because one of Elin’s best buds and cousin Max turns 5 today! How’s that for the ultimate 5 on Friday? Max and Elin share a special bond. Max is so sweet and caring. They have a blast playing together or just sitting and cuddling. Here is a picture from his birthday last year.

I am so excited that we just received this gray and white chevron scarf that I ordered from this Etsy shop. I originally saw this scarf on the adorable Lex on Erin’s blog and she was nice enough to share where they got it. I am obsessed with anything gray and chevron.

My desktop computer is quite old and has been non-compliant lately. After much thought and research I am super excited to order one of these! I have been deciding between the Pro and the Air and I have decided to go with the Pro.

We are thinking Spring around here and getting Elin some new kicks. She has these  new Under Armours and has been enjoying them.

Elin is starting to get very helpful. She closes doors, helps pick up things, and she loves to “vacuum”. She looks so cute pushing her little vacuum around.

Tea Party

Elin has a new favorite and it’s playing tea time.

Elin Tea Time

We have a tea set upstairs and a different set downstairs and she can’t get enough of playing with them. I had bought this fabric tea set when she was just an infant, thinking that it was a nice starter set since it’s soft and plush. To be completely honest, I sort of forgot about it and it was on the back of a shelf in her play room. I got it out and was amazed that she seemed to know how to play with it. She immediately started drinking from the cups and pretending to eat the cakes.  I was shocked because we hadn’t played with a kitchen set yet or play food. I’ve had a kitchen set bought that I intended to give her for Christmas that is sitting in our basement. I think we will give it to her for her second birthday. I personally wanted to wait until she was old enough to know what a play kitchen was about and to be excited to get one.

Elin Tea Time

Elin Tea Time

It’s amazing for me to watch her play with the set because I assumed she didn’t know what do to with a play set like that. I tend to underestimate what she can do and what she knows because I still see her very much as a baby and I think I do this because I try not to rush her growing up. I like to savor each stage and it’s such a mixture of happiness and a little bit of sadness to see her doing and learning new things.

Right now, tea time at her little table is one of her new favorites.

Team Teddy

This Five for Friday is all about bringing awareness to the adorable Teddy Fish and Menkes Syndrome.   There is a movement of supporters, bloggers, celebrities and athletes who are making  Team Teddy signs and posting them on social media. If you would like to read more about Teddy’s story please check out his CaringBridge page. I would like to do this Five for Friday on five staggering facts about Menkes Syndrome.

I am super excited to be participating in another link up hosted by: The Good LifeA. Liz AdventuresCarolina Charm, & Hello! Happiness.

Team Teddy

1

Menkes is a rare genetic disease that is commonly overlooked by the medical community because the signs and symptoms at birth and in early infancy are subtle and often confused with other diseases. Early treatment of symptoms is crucial for these children to maintain a sense of normalcy during their infancy and early childhood.

2

Menkes syndrome is caused by a defect in the ATP7A gene and that makes it hard for the body to distribute copper in food from the intestines into the bloodstream for use in other areas. As a result, the brain and other parts of the body do not get enough copper.

3

Symptoms of Menkes can include, but are not limited to:

  • sparse, kinky hair
  • poor weight gain
  • sagging facial features
  • poor muscle tone
  • seizures

4

The incidence of Menkes syndrome  is estimated to be 1 in 100,000 newborns. Children with Menkes syndrome typically begin to develop symptoms during infancy and often do not live past age three.

5

As of today, there is still no cure. Awareness is the first step.

Elin and her Babies

littlethingslogo

Linking up again  with Jess and Ashley for the Little Things link up.

Elin has always loved small babies and smaller stuffed animals, but her two current favorites are Boo dog and ducky. She also has several rubber ducks that she loves as well. I believe her two favorite words are dog and duck as well. She usually has one or the other in her hands. It amazes me how many things she can do and play with and still keep a hold of Boo and ducky as well.

IMG_1739

IMG_2317

She has started showing them a lot more love by giving them kisses and hugs all the time.  Her face just lights up when she is playing in a room and she spots them.  She has many other dolls and stuffed animals but these are definitely the current favorites right now.

Sweetheart Party

Elin attended her first Valentine’s day party on Saturday at Gymboree. We meet her Nana and Papa there and she really enjoyed showing off to them. The first half of the party was some organized activities and some free gym to music. Elin LOVED the music. She danced and danced! I really need to find her a dance class in the area that would take 2 year olds and under. So far I have not had much luck.

Elin Dancing

We had one mishap where she tripped and bit her tongue. Her tongue bled a little and there was about 2 minutes of tears, but she quickly recovered and was back out on the dance floor gym mat in no time.

The second half of the party was in a different room where there was snack time and then a craft. The snack was water or juice and a valentine cookie. Elin does not like sweets and would not eat her cookie at all! The closest thing she will eat is animal crackers. She did like picking the sprinkles off the cookie.

Elin and her Valentine Cookie

After the snacks, they started their crafts. They colored paper hearts attached to sticks and then stuck the sticks into Styrofoam to make heart bouquets. I thought it was a cute and unique idea!

Elin and her Valentine crafts

Elin Valentine's Crafts

After the craft time, there was a little bit more open gym time and then we left. All in all, I think she had a blast. She was worn out and fell asleep a couple minutes after we pulled out of the parking lot.

Happy Friday! I am super excited to be participating in another cool link up hosted by: The Good LifeA. Liz AdventuresCarolina Charm, & Hello! Happiness.

1

I was so excited to come across these super adorable chevron mini Chinese take out containers in the Valentine’s section at JoAnne fabrics. I thought they would be great for Elin to fill with goodies.

DSCN5606

2

Elin had a blast filling the containers up with chocolates for family and friends for Valentine’s Day. Impressively, she even understood when I told her to give each container a mixture of different candies. It’s exciting to get her involved in holiday activity.

3

We had a snow day on Wednesday where I was able to work from home and it was so wonderful getting to spend some extra time at home with Elin. My commute time alone adds at least an hour and a half to my time away from Elin.

It is hard to get Elin and the dogs (Angel and Fifi) to sit in one place together. I have very few pictures of them in the same frame looking at me. One of them is always a blur on the screen because they all move so fast! I was thrilled to capture this image of them together. Elin thought it was hilarious that that the dogs were sitting in her chair.
